In late July 2025, Helsinki marked twelve months without a single traffic death on its streets. The last fatal crash before the streak happened in July 2024 in the eastern district of Kontula, according to Finland's public broadcaster Yle.

Key facts

  • No one died in Helsinki traffic for 12 consecutive months, from July 2024 to July 2025.

  • In the late 1980s, about 30 people a year were killed on the city's streets; there were 5 deaths in 2022, 6 in 2023 and 4 in 2024.

  • More than half of Helsinki's streets now have a 30 km/h speed limit, mostly in residential areas and near schools.

  • In November 2025 the city received a special road safety recognition from the safety organization DEKRA for the zero-death year.

Why it matters

Helsinki is a capital of about 660,000 people, and a year with no road deaths shows that the Vision Zero idea is not just a slogan. Lower speeds, safer crossings, speed cameras and good public transport add up to fewer families losing someone on an ordinary trip.

Worth noting

The streak ended on 1 August 2025, when a 70-year-old cyclist died after a collision with another cyclist. City officials stress that the result comes from decades of steady work rather than a single policy.
